We all wonder, don't we? What happens to us after we die? There are many theories. There are many stories. But over and over, our minds conjure soft clouds and angels, looking down from above. Or perhaps a numb nirvana, where every good pleasure rushes through our soul, as our body disintegrates into the earth.
Death is the unknown. It is the final great enemy that mankind has not defeated. And since we have not yet experienced what will happen after we die, our imaginations are left to run wild. Creating myths and legends that we hope will quiet our fears. Guardian angels, Karma, and Purgatory. And yet everyone is striving for that final level. Heaven. Finally. Rest.
But for a Christian, the afterlife is a huge part of the package. Faith here and now anticipates the promise of what comes next. Life eternal, with God the Father. Jesus died and was risen so that we might share in his eternal life. So, just as Jesus ascended to heaven, that’s where we are going too, right? A ghost-like me, drifting up, just like in the cartoons.
But the promise of Jesus is not that you will die and just go to heaven. This is where our fairy tales leave us, floating in the sky. Rather His promise is much more than that. Listening to the Word of God, we discover there is something greater than what we have imagined.
