It is not hard today to see the world around us speaking lies and false truths and half-understood realities. The spiritual realm from above, from before all things and unto the end of time is a bigger reality that is largely unseen by our here-and-now eyes. So the misinformation abounds and the shadows pour out from their lips.
Why do the nations rage and the peoples cry out emptiness?
Why do they keep speaking their nothings? Why do they keep calling out in emptiness? Culture, society, influencers, politicians, your friend on Facebook, they can’t stop breathing out obscurity. Do you believe what they say? Are you a part of the problem or questioning the answer? This psalm is a cry of disbelief and a call to set things right. How could this creation continue in such an ignorant state?
We have a chance to reflect on this every one in awhile when the boldness against our Creator is heightened in our midst. Election years, public scandals, leaders of the world tearing themselves apart before our very eyes. It’s easy to see the raging nations and their stupidness on a grand stage.
Or is it?
Just previously in Psalm 1, the happy one הָגָה “meditated upon” the instruction of God. This was the pinnacle of what had been given to the people of God - growling, murmuring, constantly speaking over and over again… the Word of God. But now in Psalm 2, הָגָה has a negative meaning, associated with speaking vanity or emptiness. What a difference between the two: speaking God’s word, and speaking nothingness. Do they not see how silly it all is?
