Fight To Exist (Psalm 14)

The fool says in his heart, “There is not a God.”
They are corrupt
They do abominable deeds;
There is not one who does good.

This is a glimpse of the battle for existence. “There is not.” What is true? What does and does not exist? Both the fools and God recognize that “there is not” in this world. And this is the invisible fight between the foolish and the wise: what actually exists? There is not a God versus there is not one who does good. So, who is right?

And who is the group of “they”? Is it just a small group of foolish sinners? Or is it a bigger reality than that?

YHWH looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there is a MAN, one who understands,
A MAN, one who seeks God.

God looks down from His great throne on high as Creator and Almighty. Notice the different perspective from the One who has complete control. The One who speaks into existence what is. The One who looks down to see. This is the difference between God and His creatures. YHWH looks down from heaven to make His assessment. He watches for even just for ONE person who understands. Just ONE who fears Him: that is the true beginning of one who possesses God’s wisdom.

All have turned
Together they are corrupt.

There is not one who does good.
There is not even ONE.

They do not exist. The all-together the masses have turned away from heaven. They are a group of corrupt and terrible beasts, just swarming upon the earth. All-together-every sinful person. But is there even ONE? Just ONE who does good? “There is not.” He does not exist in the chaos of the earth. Not a single person. Not even ONE.

Do you feel the tension? Can’t you see the heights and depths of a person’s hypocrisy? The masses, the movements, the herd of obscenity that surrounds us. It is nothing new - all people have turned away.

Even still, sometimes, I think I am the ONE. The only one who actually understands my God. The one who seeks and prays and believes. I am not like them, I comfort myself. I am better than the multitude who confess “there is not.” And yet, God sees the truth. “There is not” even one who understands. Not even me.
